Enlightening Story – Oldie But Goodie

An enlightening story captured from an internal network’s blog site:

A man is jogging along a deserted beach just before sunrise. Because of the tides, the beach this particular morning is covered with thousands and thousands of starfish. In the distance the man sees a small boy throwing something.

As he comes closer, he calls out, ‘What are you doing out so early?’

‘Trying to get these starfish back into the ocean,’ replies the small boy. ‘They will die if they are left out here once the sun gets up.’

‘What is the point?’ asks the man as he slowly jogs closer. ‘Look how many there are. You can never throw enough back in to make any difference.’

The small boy looks at the starfish in his hand and shrugs. ‘It makes a difference to this one.’ he says and then throws the starfish back into its home in the ocean.

San Jose Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon

We all had a great time running the San Jose Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon yesterday. The morning started off on the chilly side. As soon as I started running, I immediately warmed up. Everyone did well and most importantly, we all had a great time! The event was quite extravagant for a half marathon (even more so than actual marathon events). There were thousands and thousands of people. The crowd support was amazing, the aid station support was amazing, and the finish line goodies were off the hook. We all scored multiple pairs of Spenco slippers (as a freebie for finishing the race). Did I mention that the finishers medal was freakin’ nice? All in all, it was an enjoyable event. What made it most enjoyable was the fact that we did it with friends.

Finish Times:

Felix: 2:09:42

David: 1:53:00

Jay: 1:31:53

Kelly: Her knee gave her serious problems and she had to stop at mile 11! I feel really bad for her. This is her first injury. It is usually me that gets tore up!

Props go out to Leticia, Molly, Jovino, Peter, and the handful of friends that we ran into during the event.

Great job everyone! We had some serious good times!

Concurrent with this event was the Phedippidations 2nd Annual World Wife Half Marathon (and Kick the Couch 5k). This particular event is brilliant and enables runners from all over the world to run together. Read more about it by going here. Don’t forget to register next year!

Drugs? Who Needs Drugs if You Exercise and Eat a Plant Based Diet?

I haven’t had my cholesterol checked for quite some time now. I went to the lab yesterday to get my blood drawn. The results came this morning. It appears that all that cardio (and diet) that we do really pays off!

Mt. Diablo Run – North Gate Entrance

I haven’t run up Diablo for almost a year. Friday, June 8, I ran up past the 1000 feet elevation sign. I then ran back down the mountain. I wanted to go all the way to the top but two major things prevented me from accomplishing this task:

1. It was getting late and the sun was starting to set.

2. SF Marathon is a month away. I need to keep my overall biomechanics in check. I do not want to hurt my iliotibial band like I did last year when I ran up to the summit of Mount Diablo.

Nevertheless, it was a peaceful and scenic run.

Wildflower Olympic Distance Triathlon – 10k Run Leg

The view of the vast sea of athletes pushing themselves at this year’s Wildflower has given me the motiviation to further challenge my limits. The transition area was a very busy place as thousands of athletes were going in and out to their next leg in such a fast pace. Traffic organization within the transition area was well handled by the race volunteers.
Because we were the relay wave of the triathlon, we were the last to start. We started at 11 AM where the temperature was warm and quickly rising (Elizabeth was first). Our relay team handled the olympic triathlon course with no problems. We clicked well and transioned smoothly and efficiently. Most importantly, we had such a great time participating in the event. Elizabeth did the swim leg (.9 miles), Bill did the cycle leg (25 miles), and I did the run (6.2 miles). We placed 5th overall (out of all the relay teams that participated in the triathlon). The run itself was described as an “excrutiating 10K” and it did have a decent share of inclines. I highly respect all the solo triathletes who were able to pull off this 10k after completing the challenging swim and the challenging cycle leg.Activity

Brentwood Spring to Life 5k

Yesterday was the Spring to Life 5k and 1Mile run held in Downtown Brentwood.
It was a beautiful and warm day. The turnout was bigger than last year and
the health expo had more booths this year. The nice thing about the expo this year
is that it was held underneath a tent providing shade for everyone. This is a good thing
because we were in upper eighty degree weather as the day went on.I had a loose goal of running the 5k (3.1 miles) in under 20 minutes and am pleased to have completed
the distance in 19:29.Congratulations to Felix for meeting his sub 30 minute goal (way below 30 minutes!)! Yea!

20 Mile Easter Run

I was planning on getting out of the door at 7 AM but was an hour late. Sunny skies and mild winds were with me during this 20 mile jaunt throughout Brentwood. I passed by a runner when I hit mile 7 and passed by this same runner during mile 18. She was probably out doing a 20 miler as well. It was one of those runs that seemed like that it would never end. But hey, its all over now and Kelly is out doing an 8 miler.Activity

Brentwood Loop 13.33 Miles

Due to some family activities this morning, I started my run late (around 5:00PM). It was tough getting the motivation to get out of the door. Once I started my run, right away, things felt good. I did a 13.33 Mile loop that had me running down Balfour, Walnut Blvd, Oak Street (through Downtown), Garin, Sycamore, Brentwood Blvd, Sand Creek (running against headwind – ugh), and San Jose Ave. The last three miles I ran through the hills of Shadow Lakes.Activity

Los Vaqueros Watershed

Yet another perfect day. Greg and I hit the road from Shadow Lakes at around 7:30AM. He took me through the scenic route that leads to the Los Vaqueros Reservoir. There is a fairly steep climb up to the dam and we repeated it twice. On the way back, we ran into Chris from 2Real and rode a few miles with him to the shop and then back home. Good times and a great workout.Activity

Brentwood Out and Back

Today was the perfect day to run. I left Shadow Lakes and ran down Balfour and turned on Highway 4 (towards Discovery Bay). I then ran around the ClubOne Area and went back home. It was one of those runs where I did not feel any fatigue and could have kept going. But alas, I was pressed for time…
